| 230 | 🙂 | General | Hauler and miner synergy issues. Creating some custom miners was easy enough but making a hauler to haul from the storage or miners to the base is troublesome, i will describe the situation below: Previous setup: 5-15 miners per ore with 4 inventory slots each into 1-3 nearby storages which haulers pick up from, storages being only 8 slots mean they float around them with full inventories holding up traffic. Issue here is storages are too small to be used effectively in this situation. if they were like 40 slots there would be no issue(though that is so big it would be kinda silly), splitting them between more storages mitigates the problem but means more overhead every mine move. New setup: So i moved over to a different way of doing it where a different issue with haulers comes into play, i have probably 40ish miners with 4 inventory slots, the miners will just hold the ore in their inventory and sit inside the logistics area, the haulers will create a job to fill an empty smelter(20 items), they will decide 3-7 units(out of 70-80 available) is the correct amount and run across the whole map, meanwhile there are like 10 other haulers coming to the same miner to collect the other 70ish ore left by the first one. When you have 40 miners this means you need like 200+ haulers transporting ore to handle 40 miners where the haulers if they were more inteligent about the hauling could have up to 9(x20) inventory slots which would mean like 5 haulers would be overkill for 40 miners. I can't see any way to do this myself(interact with the request system directly) from the mining and hauling perspective, i understand i can create requests but can't control the actual hauling, my best guess is behaviours passing the unit id to a hauler via radar when the inventory is above X units of ore, this wouldn't scale very well though due to the limited number of signals you can send, who knows what would happen if 20 miners were all sending theirs IDs to the hauler at the same time, most likely a super inefficient path unless it could recieve all 20 at the same time and loop through them. It also comes back to those low unit(3-7) transport jobs coming through even from full to empty units/buildings. The reason behind radar for signals is because any kind of looping through units seems to be limited to sight range(15) or radar range(30ish) where miners could be 200-300 blocks apart. This isn't an angry rant or anything, just a i don't see the path to "megabase" for the game going forward and it makes me sad, at the rate i am going i will have a performance death to hauler overload if they don't deadlock in the base first. What does the path to a megabase even look like, is it possible or will every base die before hitting it? Does it mean playing a really specific strategy like miner > local storage > hauler trade route > base storage as i think the specifically defined point to point hauling doesn't suffer from the same 3-7 items issue, if that is the case that is also sad as where does the fancy behaviour system come into play if not using it is the better strategy? | 2023-08-16 15:30:39 |
